181st Medical Group conducts readiness exercise

By Staff Sgt. Lonnie Wiram 181st Intelligence Wing

HULMAN FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ind. – The 181st Medical Group (MDG), 181st Intelligence Wing, conducted a wing-wide readiness exercise Nov. 2.

The exercise was a simulated chemical attack on the base, necessitating mass vaccinations.

“This is something that would happen in our home communities if a public health emergency arose requiring mass dispensing of medications or mass vaccination,” said Air Force Maj. John C. Shepard, organizer of the exercise and public health officer assigned to the 181st MDG.

During the exercise, Airmen received an influenza shot.

“The shot checked off two boxes for readiness,” said Col. William L. Bray, commander, 181st MDG. “One, it made sure everyone got their flu shot, and two, the medical group could see how we could process vaccines for a mass of people.”

“This exercise proves that the 181st MDG is ready if we should ever have to deliver mass vaccines,” said Senior Airman Jessica A. Farkas, operations monitor for the exercise, 181st MDG. “To be ready is crucial for our mission.”
