Citizen-Warrior: Illinois Soldier embraces deployment challenges

By Army Maj. Timothy Johnson 184th Sustainment Command

CAMP TAJI, Iraq — Army Sgt. Gabrielle Calderon wasn’t supposed to deploy, but when a last-minute opportunity to support the mission in Iraq was offered, the Illinois Army Guard Soldier didn’t hesitate.

“My family is my motivation and drive behind everything I do,” she said. “I am only here because I have their support.”

Serving on her first overseas deployment, Calderon serves as both a convoy commander and security element team lead for ‘Advise and Assist’ missions with the Iraqi army. Those who work with her say she brings energy and laughter to the daily grind.

“Sgt. Calderon has a drive to continuously improve, displays a contagious attitude, and shows strong professionalism,” Army Maj. Zachary Bokum, her team officer in charge said. “She is a leader that others need to emulate.”

For Calderon, being a Soldier presents challenges and opportunities.

“There is always a new goal to achieve,” she said. “A higher rank, a new MOS, a new unit, a new mission.”

Calderon says choosing to stay in the Army is the right choice for her and her family.

“My husband has always encouraged me to do what I love and what I’m good at,” she said. “For me, that’s being a Soldier. Having him by my side allows us to show our kids that hard work is not only the job of a dad … in our home, we are a team.”

Working as a motor transportation operator, where most of her co-workers are men, also motivates Calderon.

“I use it as the fuel to put my engine into overdrive,” she said.

While Calderon said she enjoys the challenges and opportunities that come with deploying, she’s looking forward to getting back to some of her favorite activities at home – spending time with her children and tinkering on race cars. Until then, the Illinois sergeant will continue to focus on the mission.

“I have been blessed with some amazing leaders in my path,” she said. “I take pride in what they teach me. I want to provide the leadership to my Soldiers that has been provided to me.”
