Louisiana Army National Guardsman Spc. Curtis L. Morrison of Lake Providence, La., and Mayor Floyd Baker of Bonita, La., fill sandbags to attempt to reduce the flooding threat in the small community of Bonita. Hurricane Gustav dumped over 17 inches of rain in Northeast Louisiana after making landfall on the coast of South Louisiana. Morrison is assigned to the 528th Engineer Battalion in Monroe, La.

Members of the Arkansas Army National Guard's 142nd Fires Brigade hand out water and packaged military meals (MREs -Meals Ready to Eat) to individuals at Fort Chaffee who sought shelter from Hurricane Gustav. The World War II era post is housing over 2,300 displaced citizens while the Salvation Army is on hand at Fort Chaffee to take the lead role in feeding the evacuees. Fort Chaffee processed over 10,000 evacuees in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina three years ago.

Teens from around the country produced three documentaries about "action heroes" in the Army Guard in a Fresh Films competition earlier this year.
