Joseph Scanlan, of the North Dakota National Guard’s 164th Engineering Battalion of Minot, perform levee patrols in one section of more than 20 miles worth of levees from Minot to Burlington that the Guard is patrolling. Soldiers walk the levees to inspect for any damages that may impact structural integrity, as well as provide a security presence along to river to discourage theft or vandalism.

Members of the 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry Regiment’s Female Engagement Team learn how to dine politely during an Afghan meal during pre-mobilization training May 31 in Fort Drum. The 10-person FET will act as cultural mediators when deployed to Iraq, which means they will go on combat missions with the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, march and fight as they do, and then talk to Afghan women in an effort to understand their concerns.

SPECIAL: South Dakota National Guard fights floods

A CH-47 Chinook helicopter from Company B, 2nd Battalion 238th Aviation, based in Peoria Illinois is being refueled while on the ramp at the Iowa Air National Guard base in Sioux City, Iowa. Members of the 185th Air Refueling Wing based in Sioux City are refueling the helicopter while it is still running. “Hot Refueling” saves time for the air crew who will return to flooded areas along the Missouri River. National Guard Soldiers and from South Dakota, Illinois and Iowa are assisting local and state authorities in Western Iowa and South East South Dakota to protect private properties and municipalities along the swollen Missouri River.

Bender, deputy division chaplain for the 36th Infantry Division, is a former Baptist youth and recreational activities minister who lost everything, including his ministry, after a divorce. He enlisted in the Army in 2004 because he said he had nowhere else to turn. An encounter with a helpful chaplain at his advanced individual training led him to the Chaplain Corps and a new ministry -- and an even stronger relationship with God.
