HAWAII WILDFIRES: STRINGER USACE Kilohana Temporary Housing Project Brief
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Honolulu District
Aug. 8, 2024 | 5:25
Today marks the one-year anniversary of the devastating wildfires that swept through Lahaina and Kula on August 8, 2023. State of Hawaii U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono and U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda recently visited the Kilohana transitional housing project site to check on the progress of the project.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in partnership with FEMA, State, and County officials, is working tirelessly to construct temporary housing for survivors of the 2023 Maui wildfires. The site will include 169 FEMA-procured housing units ranging from one to three bedrooms.

During the visit, USACE’s Hawaii Wildfires Recovery Field Office commander Col. Eric Swenson and his team, FEMA Coordinating Officer Bob Fenton, and State officials provided updates on the project's current status.

Lt. Col. Adrian Biggerstaff who recently became the 74th commander of the USACE Honolulu District and Lt. Col. Collen Jones were also at the briefing. Jones will assume the duties of the RFO commander later this month upon the departure of Swenson.

Approximately 65% of the underground water, sewer, and electrical infrastructure has been installed and the project is currently in construction phase with an estimated completion at the end of October 2024

We are proud to be a part of the federal, state, and local efforts to support Maui's recovery. Thank you to everyone involved in the process.
