While conducting airfield assessments, in often austere environments, pavement engineers and airfield specialists must calculate current airfield surface damage. The calculations directly impact pavement suitability for aircraft on specific airfield surfaces. Failure to accurately calculate existing pavement damage presents potentially detrimental impacts to the mission, ultimately endangering aircraft and passengers. The Air Force currently utilizes paper-based methods with manual calculations to compute airfield damage.

My proposed solution is developing an Android application plugin that eliminates the need for manually calculating airfield distresses, based on a functioning Excel prototype. Airfield assessment teams and combat controllers currently utilize an Android application called Android Tactical Assault Kit (ATAK). The program is well developed, headed by the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), and provides features that significantly enhance surveying, communications, and mapping capabilities into a single user-interface. ATAK allows the installation of third-party plugins to take advantage of these features, and adding a PCI calculator into the existing platform would dramatically improve overall efficiency and wide-spread use. The prototype would be used as the foundation for the development of a plugin on the Android platform.
