Guard Soldier Featured in Army ‘Be All You Can Be’ Campaign
March 15, 2023
First Sgt. John Melson, then a Sgt. 1st Class and member of the Massachusetts Army National Guard, was presented the Bronze Star Medal with "V" device for valor at Fort Benning, Ga., Aug. 23, 2013, for his actions in 2009 while fighting off a Taliban ambush in Gerani, Afghanistan. Melson, now a member of the Georgia National Guard, is featured in the new U.S. Army recruiting campaign commercials.

Massachusetts Army National Guard Soldiers assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 181st Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, perform combat lifesaver tasks during a situational training exercise July 19, 2022, at the 44th IBCT’s eXportable Combat Training Capability exercise at Fort Drum, New York. More than 2,500 Soldiers are participating in the training event, which enables brigade combat teams to achieve the trained platoon readiness necessary to deploy, fight  and win.

Massachusetts Guard, first responders train in ‘ice bath’

Massachusetts Army National Guard teamed with Michigan first responders Jan. 24, 2022, to perform hypothermia training at Lake Margrethe near Camp Grayling, Mich. The event took place during Northern Strike 22-1 (Winter Strike), a National Guard Bureau-sponsored exercise at Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center and Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center.
