The Red Arrow fought to the very end in World War II
September 9, 2020
Defiant to the very end and refusing to capitulate until Japan formally surrendered in Tokyo, Gen. Tomoyuki Yamashita, commander of all Japanese forces in the Philippines, is shown Sept. 2, 1945, as he surrenders the battered remnants of his once-formidable forces to the 32nd “Red Arrow” Division at Kiangan in northern Luzon, Philippine Islands. From left to right: Col. Ernest Barlow, 32nd Division chief of staff; Gen. Tomoyuki Yamashita; Lt. Col. Alex Robinet, 128th Infantry Regiment executive officer; and two members of Yamashita’s staff. Yamashita signed surrender documents the following day.
