ARLINGTON, Va., - The chief of the National Guard Bureau congratulated 54 newly naturalized U.S. citizens, including a member of the Georgia Army National Guard, during a ceremony hosted by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in Atlanta on Tuesday.
"In addition to all of the formal responsibilities asked of you as a new citizen, I would ask you to share with your fellow citizens that which makes you unique," said Air Force Gen. Craig R. McKinley. "Let the people of this country learn from you - your culture, so that their lives might be enriched.
"We know that a society of diverse cultures and ideas is stronger because of them."
He also asked that the new citizens help to advance the cause of opportunity and diversity in their new country.
"If anyone knows the fortitude and courage it takes to establish a new life in a new country, it is you," he said. "You, of all people, know the rewards this nation gives its citizens."
Spc. Damien Hewitt, who was born in Jamaica, was among the group sworn in on Tuesday. He is a member of the 178th Military Police Company based in Kennesaw, Ga.
"Upon joining the military, every servicemember raises their right hand and swears to an oath similar to the one you will pledge today," said McKinley.
McKinley said that the "American Dream" is best realized when our diversity is celebrated and shared by the members of this country.
"America is a nation of people who value both tradition and the exploration of new frontiers," he said. "We are a nation of people who embraced the freedom to build better lives for themselves in their adopted homeland.
"By adding your own history and experiences to the fabric of our country, you make America better."
