Honduras: Missouri Guard member embodies National Guard spirit in Honduras

By Army Pfc. Clay Beyersdorfer 70th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

NACO, Honduras - Army Sgt. Devlin Hutchins - a noncommissioned officer currently on his two week annual training rotation in support of the Beyond the Horizons 2012 Honduras-mission, with the 1140th Engineer Battalion, Headquarters and Headquarters Company - takes pride in his National Guard status.

Along with Hutchins, more than 250 service members, representing the National Guard from 14 different states, Navy, Air Force and Reserves from all the services have all been in rotation for BTH since personnel arrived in April.

BTH 2012 will provide support by conducting medical, dental and engineering assistance programs, in response to the requests and requirements of the government of Honduras.

Despite all the different faces and unfamiliarity with those that surround him, Hutchins carries on with the mission.

"One of the things I take pride in the most in being a guardsman is the fact that no matter where you go, every guard Soldier can work with anybody," Hutchins said. "I've worked with National Guard people around the world, and everyone I've come across is there to complete the mission and get the job done."

Aside from Honduras, Hutchins also spent time in Korea where he also worked Soldiers from the National Guard.

"We're much different from Active Duty in the work aspect; those are people who spend every working day together," Hutchins said. "As National Guard Soldiers we are all moving parts that have to come together and be able to adapt to what's going on here and continue the success of the mission already in place. No matter where you are or who you're with, you have to able to trust the person next to you and complete the mission"

The civic action programs being put in place by the BTH mission are designed to assist the local communities with a wide range of construction projects and include building repairs and improvements, utility system repairs and technical assistance.

Hutchins' pride in the National Guard is accompanied by his large amount of support for the overall mission being conducted in Honduras.

"I think it's an excellent mission," Hutchins said. "It really is about looking beyond our own horizons as soldiers and as people and looking elsewhere in the world to help people out."

BTH Honduras 2012 is a U.S. Army South exercise deploying military engineers and medical professionals to Honduras for training, while providing services to rural communities. BTH is part of U.S. Southern Command's annual humanitarian and civic assistance program.

Working closely with host nation forces and civilian organizations, BTH teams participate in a valuable training opportunity and provide medical, dental and engineering support.
