Camp Atterbury Storm Damage

By National Guard Bureau

EDINBURGH, Ind. - Late Tuesday evening a tornado moved through Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center causing significant damage. There were no injuries sustained from the storm.

In addition to 50 buildings that were damaged to varying degrees, military and civilian vehicles, power lines, fences and other infrastructure sustained heavy damage.

Utility companies have been on scene much of the day and will continue to work through the evening restoring or stabilizing services to the site. Soldiers, contractors and other personnel at the post are assessing damage and stabilizing where necessary.

Training at the post continues and according to Camp Atterbury officials was minimally impacted by weather yesterday.

The quick implementation of standard safety procedures was key in preventing injuries as well as allowing training to resume as quickly as possible according to Maj. Mike Brady, the Camp Atterbury public affairs officer.

"Our first priority, of course, is the safety of all personnel on post and thankfully though the damage is obviously serious, no one was hurt during the storm. A fact due in large to our standard operating procedures and Soldiers in the affected area sheltering as quickly as possible," said Brady.

Early damage estimates are at approximately $19 million.
