Boston proclamation party gets Air Force Week rolling

BOSTON (AFPN) - More than 300 people crowded outside of historic Faneuil Hall here Aug. 17 to celebrate the start of Air Force Week New England.

The crowd was entertained by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard Drill team, Air National Guard's Band of the Northeast and a flyover. Guest speakers included Massachusetts Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Murray and Lt. Gen. Craig R. McKinley, director of the Air National Guard.

General McKinley said he was excited to be able to take part in Air Force Week events scheduled in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

"It is a pleasure to be in New England to celebrate Air Force Week," he said. "It is a really great way to showcase the great job the men and woman of the United States Air Force do around the world."

Thomas Glenn, from Long Island, N.Y., was in town to visit his daughter and came upon the event by accident.

"I have been quite impressed with what I have seen here today," he said. "It makes me want to check out some of the other events that are scheduled for the rest of the week."

New England is one of six locations to host an Air Force Week. The events reach beyond the normal open house as Airmen reach out to communities of major cities in an effort to highlight the Air Force's role in today's military operations as the service approaches its 60th anniversary.

General McKinley said is important for Airmen to take a timeout and appreciate their history.

"We don't get a chance to stop and celebrate our heritage very often," he said. "This event gives us all a chance to pause and reflect on our history and be a part of this great celebration."

Air Force Week started with a military appreciation day at Fenway Park in Boston Aug. 15. The celebration ends Aug. 26. Visit www.airforceweek.com/events.html for a schedule and information about upcoming events.
