Guardsmen provide quick response to plane crash

By National Guard Bureau

CAMP DENALI, Alaska (AFPN) - Pararescuemen from the Alaska Air National Guard's 212th Rescue Squadron helped stabilize and transport the passenger of a single-engine plane that crashed near Resurrection Pass June 27.

Alaska State Troopers requested the Alaska National Guard's assistance in responding to the crash around 8 p.m. The Rescue Coordination Center dispatched an HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter from the 210th Rescue Squadron and an HC-130P/N Hercules from the 211th Rescue Squadron that were already in the air on a training mission.

The HC-130 flew to the crash scene, about 10 miles west of Summit Lake Lodge, after it refueled the Pave Hawk in the air. The HH-60 went to Kulis Air National Guard Base in Anchorage to pick up pararescuemen for the mission and then headed to the incident.

Upon arrival at the crash scene, pararescuemen found the pilot of the downed Piper PA-12 plane had died. The passenger was receiving help from hikers who had witnessed the crash. Pararescuemen stabilized the man, and transported him aboard the helicopter to a hospital in Anchorage.
