Senior Enlisted Advisor (SEA) John T. Raines III is the SEA to the Chief of the National Guard Bureau, stationed at the Pentagon, Washington DC. He serves as the Chief’s principal military advisor on all enlisted matters affecting training, operations, health of the force, and enlisted professional development. As the highest enlisted leadership level, SEA Raines provides direction for the enlisted force and represents their interests.
He began his military career in August 1989 and has served in the Army National Guard and United States Army for over 35 years. He completed basic military training and advanced individual training at Fort (Ft) Jackson, South Carolina, and Ft. Eisenhower, Georgia, as a 31N Communications Specialist before reclassifying as an 11B Infantryman at Ft. Moore, Georgia.
SEA Raines was promoted to Sergeant Major on 01 May 2008. Before becoming the 7th SEA, Raines held several positions of leadership, including the 13th Sergeant Major of the Army National Guard, the Mississippi Army National Guard State Command Sergeant Major (CSM), Command Senior Enlisted Leader (CSEL) of the Mississippi National Guard, and the Joint Operations (J3) Senior Enlisted Leader for United States Indo-Pacific Command, along with many other key leadership positions.
SEA Raines’ deployments include Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was activated in support of Operation Noble Eagle and served in the Republic of Korea. SEA Raines has deployed throughout Asia and the Pacific, coaching and mentoring Joint U.S. forces and numerous foreign partners in the United States Indo-Pacific Command region.
SEA Raines is a native of Alabama and has been married to his wife, Karen, for 35 years. They have a daughter, Stephanie, a son, Richard, a daughter in law, Brittany, and four granddaughters, Aubrey, Natalie, Khloe, and Tilly.
