South Carolina National Guard Soldiers with both the 122nd and 178th Engineer Battalions team up to repair a culvert on a road damaged by Hurricane Florence near Ruby, South Carolina, Sept. 30, 2018. The South Carolina National Guard assists local authorities and search and rescue teams to conduct missions marking neighborhoods to identify areas and properties that are flooded, or will potentially flood, as a result of rising waters in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence. These reconnaissance missions are critical for first responders to know exactly where citizens are, if they are in affected or potentially affected areas, and if they choose to shelter in place. Local citizens are urged to listen to their local authorities and to "turn around, don't drown" if they come across cones, barriers or flooded roads when traveling in the affected areas of S.C. Tennessee National Guardsmen from the 1st Battalion, 181st Field Artillery, fire their M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) during maneuver training at Camp Guernsey, Wyoming. The artillery battalion, headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee, is participating in a large scale training exercise named Operation Western Strike. The HIMARS is a highly mobile automatic system that fires surface-to-surface rockets. The 213th ASMC of the Arkansas National Guard mobilized to Camp Guernsey, Wyoming, to provide medical support for the training exercise Operation Western Strike. The 213th established a location to set a field hospital where treatment could be administered to any possible injured personnel. The artillery battalion, headquartered in Barling, Arkansas, is participating in a large scale training exercise named Operation Western Strike. Approximately 300 personnel from the Guard, Reserve and partner agencies gathered at Cal Fire McClellan Reload Base for annual recertification and training April 23-27, 2018. MAFFS C-130 aircrew did water drops over Whiskey Hill in the Tahoe National Forest. C-130 hercules aircraft are equipped with the USDA Forest Service MAFFS II which is capable of dropping 3,000 gallons of water or fire retardant in 6 seconds. Pennsylvania Army National Guard Soldiers and one Hawaii National Guard Soldier attended a cadre-lead Pathfinder Course at Fort Indiantown Gap March 3-17. The course consisted of three stages: sling load, helicopter landing, and drop zone phases. The course concluded with a three day field training exercise during the drop zone phase. For the second time this week, the Ohio National Guard today has activated Soldiers from the 1191st Engineering Company to support Portsmouth, Ohio, by raising additional floodgates as flooding continues. The 1191st was first activated on Sunday, Feb. 18 through Tuesday, Feb. 20, to build two floodgates at the city’s lowest elevation where the need was most immediate. Working alongside the Scioto County Emergency Management Agency and the city of Portsmouth Flood Defense Division, the Citizen-Soldiers will erect two additional floodgates along the Ohio River. Director of the Air National Guard Lieutenant General L. Scott Rice and Command Chief of the Air National Guard Chief Master Sergeant Ronald C. Anderson, visited the Fresno Air National Guard Base. They described the state of the Air National Guard and the goals for the upcoming year.
