NON-CRISIS COUNSELING AND SUPPORT

Never Thought It Could Happen
Air Force Safety Center
Nov. 19, 2014 | 0:59
I never thought this could happen to me. Since I’d wore a helmet when I was snowboarding before, it just felt natural not to wear one. I thought my ten years of experience was enough to protect me. But two bad decisions led to the worst accident I had ever been in, and the worst emotional pain and heart ache for many.
It was the last run my friends and I were going on that day. I wanted to end the day with a good run, so I must have made the decision to go off trail alone. I must have lost control and fell head first into a tree, because when I came to the next day, I was told I had multiple skull fractures, a traumatic brain injury, hearing loss and a broken leg.
There isn’t much worse than your parents being told their son had been in an accident, isn’t stable, and they didn’t know if you would be ok. It’s not only your life at stake, it’s also the effect on your loved ones who have to bear the heartache of your poor decision or judgment.
