South Carolina Military Department conducts change of command ceremony
South Carolina National Guard
Feb. 16, 2019 | 01:36:35
The South Carolina Military Department conducted a change of command ceremony Feb. 16, 2019, at McEntire Joint National Guard Base in Eastover, South Carolina recognizing U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston, Jr., the outgoing adjutant general, and welcoming U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Van McCarty, as the incoming adjutant general, signifying McCarty taking command over the South Carolina Military Department. The change of command ceremony is an event built on tradition, symbolism, and heritage. The key to the ceremony is the passing of the colors, which is a symbol of authority, representing his/her responsibilities to the organization. The passing of the colors symbolizes the transfer of authority from the outgoing commander to the incoming commander. (U.S. Army National Guard video by Capt. Cody Denson, South Carolina National Guard)
