Why Lake Lanier Looks So Different Right Now
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District
March 4, 2026 | 0:45
Lake Lanier looks different right now. And there’s a reason for it.

Lanier holds more than 60% of the water stored in the entire ACF River Basin, acting like a savings account for the system. When it rains, the reservoir stores water. When conditions are dry, that stored water helps support communities, ecosystems, and water supply downstream.

But lower water also means more exposed hazards like rocks and stumps that boaters may not be used to seeing.

Slow down. Stay alert. And remember, Lake Lanier is more than a recreation lake. It’s a working reservoir. All music included in this product is licensed through Artlist in accordance with the terms of an active subscription. (U.S. Army video by Rydell Tomas Jr.)
