Project originated from Spark Tank 2018 submission from SMSgt Powell Crider of the 164 AW, TNANG. SMSgt Crider was given approximately $500,000 from the Spark Tank competition to fund the project. ANGRC provided two enlisted ADOS tours (FY19 & FY20) to ensure the project had full-time manning. The MOTAR team is currently working from the Memphis ANG Base.

Maintenance Operations and Training in Augmented Reality (MOTAR) is platform designed to consolidate AR/VR applications in one standardized interface for all USAF training requirements. Utilizing Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware and adapting COTS software solutions we can dramatically increase the speed of adoption.

MOTAR is in its first design sprint cycle with three companies that were selected from an AFWERX Challenge in January (over 120 companies submitted proposals). Final down select will occur on 25 June 2019.

The MOTAR team has been able to leverage their hardware, software, experience and need for beta content to create training content for other AF units.

The TACP Schoolhouse needed a simple, tablet based Falcon III radio training aid to teach students how to program radios. The MOTAR team built a fully functional, virtual model that will be tested on the first class of students in June (project started in Feb). This type of rapid capability development would not have been possible using traditional contracting methods.

The ANG C130 Formal Training Unit (FTU) at Little Rock needed a way to increase student throughput in aircraft radio training. The MOTAR team has visited Little Rock and is beginning to do leverage their resources to develop a VR simulation to help train more pilot trainees through aircraft radio training. Estimated cost to unit $20,000 in SIF funds.

VTANG 229th Cyber Operations Squadron (COS) has a unique mission of creating online/virtual training for AF Cyber units. The unit is currently undergoing a mission conversion and has the capacity to support creation of Virtual Reality training curriculum. A member of the 229th COS is TDY to Memphis training with the MOTAR team to learn the specialized software needed to create VR content.
