Preserving Paradise: FEMA Funds $1.2 Million for Restoration Projects at Caja de Muertos Reserve in Ponce, Puerto Rico

PONCE, Puerto Rico, September 29, 2021 - FEMA announced the allocation of $1.2 million for recovery projects at the Caja de Muertos Reserve. These funds will be used to repair the visitor service area, repair the barracks for guards and personnel of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, and replace a photovoltaic system that will power the facilities. Among the attractions of this protected natural area are the Pelicano Beach and various educational offerings, such as talks or sea turtle nesting watches. Caja de Muertos Island, located south of Ponce, received about 20,000 visitors a year before Hurricane María in 2017.
