Cadets run to remember 9/11, POW/MIA
U.S. Air Force Academy
Sept. 13, 2012 | 1:47
Military members honor and reflect on the service of those who came before them in many different ways. Jon Zanone tells us about a group of air force academy cadets who ran to remember. C1C Daniel Zotto, USAFA Cadet Wing Commander: "we're paying respect to all those people who came before us, and the people who went to work on 9/11 and didn't know what was coming their way. So, its our way of paying tribute to them because for a large number of us this is why we entered the service." C1C Tre lowman, Cadet Vice Wing Commander: "people made the ultimate sacrifice and we can show our tribute here today by doing a mile at a time." One mile at a time to run from Peterson Air Force Base on the southeast side of Colorado Springs, to the Air Force Academy on the north west side. Carrying a unique baton made especially for the run, and led by the commandant of cadets and the cadet wing staff , Brig. Gen. Greg Lengyel, USAFA Commandant of Cadets: "it's a great way to show tribute both for our 9/11 victims from eleven years ago and also all those that have gone before us that have served as prisoners of war or are still listed as missing in action." Groups of cadets from the forty cadet squadrons ran forty five miles video of runners and made it to the south gate of the academy just as most people were going home. Cadets then ran around the terrazzo area for thirty nine hours - an hour for each year since Vietnam prisoners of war were repatriated during operation homecoming. the wing held a retreat to mark the end of the ceremony. Jon Zanone, the United States Air Force Academy. Also available in high definition.
