    In 2022, the National Guard responded to emergencies and large-scale disasters, participated in a variety of training exercises, built lasting partnerships, and tirelessly supported a nation in need. Our footprint on domestic and international events continued, highlighting our transformation from a Cold War strategic reserve to the combat reserve of the Army and the Air Force.   • SEA Whitehead visits Poland Dec.08, 2022

    SEA Tony L. Whitehead, the senior enlisted advisor to the chief of the National Guard Bureau, visited Poland Dec. 6-10, 2022, to see firsthand the innovative concepts being brought about through the state partnership program and the Air Force Research Laboratory. Whitehead met with the Lt. Col. Andrew Adamczyk, the strategic plans and policy director for the Illinois National Guard as well as other service members and civilians from Michigan and Poland to discuss the way ahead. One concept the team tested is known as Rescue Glass, a wearable headset designed to guide its user at the scene of a medical emergency by delivering instant instructions from a remotely located paramedic.   • West Virginia National Guard conducts aerial firefighting mission Nov.10, 2022

    Aircrew members with the West Virginia National Guard's Company C., 1-150th Assault Battalion, were called in to assist the National Park Service and local responders in providing aerial fire suppression support in the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in Fayetteville, West Virginia, on Nov. 10, 2022. Flying a UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter and utilizing the Water Bucket delivery system, the Guard members flew 22 total sorties in their UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter and dropped approximately 13,200 gallons of water using a Water Bucket delivery system.   • National Guard provides lifesaving response to Hurricane Ian Oct. 7, 2022

    More than 5,200 National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from Florida and seven other states assisted with Hurricane Ian response efforts, ultimately saving the lives of more than 2,000 people and 50 pets.   • Operation Merbok Response - Typhoon Relief Alaska National Guard Sept. 26, 2022

    More than 160 members of Joint Task Force Alaska have been activated following a disaster declaration issued on Sept. 17 after the remnants of Typhoon Merbok caused dramatic flooding across more than 1,000 miles of Alaskan coastline. As of Sept. 26, 2022, JTF-Alaska has logged over 2,000 personnel hours and removed more than 125,000 pounds of debris across 16 communities along the Western Alaska coastline. In addition, Alaska Army National Guard helicopters have flown more than 7,000 miles and logged more than 70 flight hours supporting Operation Merbok Response. Video by 1st Lt.   • Rappel Master Course - Aircraft Rappelling at Camp Dodge Sept. 16, 2022

    Nearly 30 Soldiers and Airmen participated in a Rappel Master course at Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa, in Sept. 2022. The participants practiced rappelling out of UH-60 Black Hawks on Sept. 14. The Iowa National Guard's Company B, 1st Battalion, 171st Aviation Regiment provided the aircraft, and the course was taught by a mobile training team from the Army National Guard Warrior Training Center in Fort Benning, Georgia.     The D.C. Air National Guard celebrated the U.S. Air Force’s 75th Anniversary at the Joint Base Andrews Air & Space Expo at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, Sept. 17-18, 2022.   • Utah Air National Guard Completes Joint Agile Combat Employment Exercise Sept. 14, 2022

    On Sept. 8 more than 200 service members across four major commands participated in a, first time ever performed, joint force exercise at Dugway Proving Ground, Utah. During the exercise, Airmen were challenged to defuel a KC-135R Stratotanker into an Army Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck to practice Agile Combat Employment. The fuel from the HEMTT was then used to fuel F-35A Lightning II assigned to the 388th Fighter Wing, and flown by the 388th FW and 419th FW, Hill Air Force Base, Utah. Video by Tech. Sgt.   • Eastern Kentucky Flood Rescue 2022 Aug. 1, 2022

    The National Guard has rescued or relocated around 500 people rescued/relocated since its activation via a Kentucky state of emergency declaration on July 28, 2022 – now elevated to a federal disaster declaration in several counties – following heavy overnight rain and severe flash flooding in many of the rural counties that lie in Kentucky’s Central Appalachia region. Tennessee and West Virginia Guard members were mobilized a few hours later under an Emergency Management Assistance Compact, or EMAC, agreement between the states. Video by Jay Martinez.

  • National Guard battles wildfires almost year-round July 14, 2022

    More than 400 National Guard members throughout four states are actively engaged or preparing for wildfire season. That number is expected to grow as predicted hot and dry weather conditions in many states have increased the potential for additional wildfires. Supporting state and local authorities in battling blazes is almost a never-ending mission for some Guard units. SEA Whitehead toured multiple MENG installations and directly engaged with Guardsmen throughout his visit. His tour also included a recognition ceremony at Camp Chamberlain for Sgt. 1st Class Alyson Pelletier, a marketing noncommissioned officer for the Maine Army National Guard's Recruiting and Retention Battalion, who submitted the winning logo design for Whitehead's core priorities as SEA - what he calls his "three Es": educate, empower, and execute.   • Army Mountain Warfare School Instructor rescues family members Feb. 17, 2022

    Staff Sgt. John Hampson, an instructor at the U.S. Army Mountain Warfare School, Jericho, Vermont, recounts his actions to rescue family members who fell into an icy lake in December 2021. Hampson improvised rescue equipment – a rope and a plastic boat, and directed family members to form a daisy chain to reach the three who were still in the icy water and pull them out.     More than 15, 000 National Guard members are currently activated to support COVID-19 relief efforts. Approximately 6, 000 of those Soldiers and Airmen are supporting civilian medical facilities, as COVID hospitalizations hit the highest amount since the pandemic began, according the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
