Statement by Gen. Steve Nordhaus, Chief of the National Guard Bureau, on the Passing of President Jimmy Carter

24-016 | Dec. 29, 2024

ARLINGTON, Va. – Our National Guard family mourns the passing of Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, 76th Governor of Georgia, Navy veteran, Nobel laureate and global humanitarian.

President Carter dedicated his life to serving our great Nation, helping those in need and working to preserve global peace. He was the product of a legacy of service: His father, James Earl Carter Sr., enlisted in the Army in 1917 for service in World War I and later earned his commission as an officer in the Georgia Army National Guard.

President Carter and his beloved late wife, Rosalynn Carter, both devout people of faith, founded the Carter Center in 1982 with an enduring mission to prevent and resolve conflicts, enhance freedom and democracy and improve health.

May we all be inspired by his words: “My faith demands—this is not optional—my faith demands that I do whatever I can, wherever I am, whenever I can, for as long as I can, with whatever I have to try to make a difference.”

Fair winds & following seas, Mr. President. Shannon and I and the National Guard extend our deepest condolences to the Carter family.
