Kosovo: Wisconsin Guard members get close-combat training

Soldiers assigned to Multinational Battle Group East participate in the basic combatives course at Camp Bondsteel, Kosovo May 11, 2012. The course, which began May 7 and was part of Modern Army Combatives, is the entry level program to prepare Soldiers to defeat the enemy in hand-to-hand combat.

Soldiers from C Company, 1st Battalion, 171st Aviation Regiment, land in a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter during a training flight on Camp Dwyer, Afghanistan. Soldiers from the unit recently transported a critically wounded Marine who had live rocket propelled grenade round embedded in his leg. Without the quick thinking of the air crew, the Marine would not have survived.

The unit was completing a 400-mile convoy from Bagram Air Field to Forward Operating Base Warrior and back as security for more than a dozen Afghan-owned cargo trucks, taking one of Afghanistan's most dangerous roads - Highway 1.

The training, facilitated by the South Dakota Army National Guard's 451st Engineer Detachment firefighters, provided hands on training of the tools and techniques to safely remove a victim from a vehicle accident. International Security Assistance Force Regional Command North supports Afghan National Security Forces in close coordination and collaboration in providing security and disrupting insurgent activities in order to protect the Afghan population.

Afghanistan: Guard members assist with large-scale inoculation project

A member of the Afghan National Civil Order Police secures a sheep for inoculation by an Afghan veterinarian while other members of the ANCOP and the International Security Assistance Force attempt to keep the other sheep in a central location. The 1st Battalion, 125th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team assisted their ANCOP partners during this operation. The 37th IBCT is deployed to northern Afghanistan in support of ISAF in order to build Afghan National Police capacity.
