NEWBURGH, N.Y., - The U.S. Air Force's first production C-5M Super Galaxy, a modernized version of the legacy C-5A airlifters flown by the New York Air National Guard's 105th Airlift Wing here at Stewart Air National Guard Base today.
The aircraft will undergo final reconditioning inside and out by members of the 105th Maintenance Group and other supporting organizations.
The C-5M Super Galaxy is the result of a two-phase modernization effort: the Avionics Modernization Program (AMP) and the Reliability Enhancement and Re-engining Program (RERP).
Rollout of the completed aircraft is expected on the first weekend of November.
The C-5 modernization program provides greatly improved reliability, efficiency, maintainability and availability - reducing total ownership and operating costs of the heavy strategic lift aircraft for the U.S. Air Force - and ensures this critical national strategic airlift resource continues serving the warfighter out to 2040, according to Lockheed Martin, the aircraft manufacturer.
The C-5M Strategic Airlifter, a National Asset, has re-set records for distance, time, speed as well as cargo capacity, improved reliability with reduced fuel consumption.
