MAJOR GENERAL GILES E. VANDERHOOF

 

Major General Giles E. Vanderhoof was the adjutant general of the state of Nevada. General Vanderhoof was the military chief of staff to the governor and commanded more than 3,000 members of the Nevada Air and Army National Guard, including armor, aviation, signal battalions, a medical detachment, a medium truck company, a heavy equipment maintenance company, the 72nd Military Police Company, the Nevada Air National Guard's 152d Airlift Wing and 152d Intelligence Squadron. He was responsible for both the federal and state missions of the Nevada National Guard. 

The general enlisted in the Nevada Air National Guard in 1959. While a student at the University of Nevada he interrupted his education to serve voluntarily on active duty at Christmas Island for the U. S. Atmospheric Nuclear Tests. When the Nevada Air National Guard was activated in January 1968 for the Pueblo Crisis he was assigned as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of a major military personnel section at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., and held the distinction of being the youngest Master Sergeant in the Air Force at that time The general received a direct commission as a second lieutenant in 1969. He held several positions as a personnel officer prior to being appointed as the adjutant general in January 2001.
