Brigadier General Mark Zirkelbach assumed duties as Deputy Adjutant General, Iowa Army National Guard, Camp Dodge, Johnston, Iowa on 31 August 2001. As Deputy Adjutant General, Iowa Army National Guard, he provides operational control of the Iowa Army National Guard for the Adjutant General, including Headquarters State Area Command and Separate Units, the 2nd Brigade 34th Infantry Division, 67th and 105th Troop Commands, and the Army Chief of Staff and Army Directorates. Responsible for unit readiness, assigned end strength mission, personnel and administration, MOS qualification, individual and collective training, equipment readiness, supply discipline, and property accountability.

The General's military service began when in 1970 when he enlisted in the Iowa Army National Guard in Non-ROTC College Student State OCS Program. He was Commissioned in 1972 and qualified as Field Artillery and Signal Corps and commanded in both branches. He entered the Title 32 AGR Program in 1985. Prior to this assignment, BG Zirkelbach served as Commander, 67th Troop Command, Iowa Army National Guard and most recently as Chief of Staff, Iowa Army National Guard, where he directed and supervised the activities of the State Area Command, Iowa Army National Guard Staff.
