Opening of New Irwin Army Community Hospital at Fort Riley
Fort Riley Public Affairs Office
Oct. 12, 2016 | 42:30
Fort Riley, KS, and Army Medical Command held a ribbon cutting ceremony to open the long-awaited new home of Irwin Army Community Hospital on October 12, 2016. The new $343 million facility replaces the oldest operating Army hospital in the Continental United States (CONUS), which originally opened in 1958. Irwin Army Community Hospital is named for Brig. Gen. Bernard John Dowling Irwin, "The Fighting Doctor,"who received the nation's first Congressional Medal of Honor, and who served as Post Surgeon during several postings at Fort Riley. Primary remarks were presented by Col. John Melton, Commander of Irwin Army Community Hospital, and by Maj. Gen. Thomas Temple, Jr., Commanding General, Regional Health Command, Central. Additional remarks were offered by The Honorable Sam Brownback, Governor of the State of Kansas, and US Senators from Kansas Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran.
