By Capt. Edwin Nieves Jr. Puerto Rico National Guard

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Puerto Rico Senate unanimously confirmed the appointment of Col. Marta Carcana as the territory’s adjutant general, making her the first woman to occupy that post.

Carcana, who had been filling the position since October, 2014 on an interim basis was nominated by the governor of Puerto Rico, Alejandro Garcia Padilla, on July 1.

“Today I congratulate Col. Marta Carcana for her Senate confirmation as the adjutant general and for being the first woman to occupy such position. Since the start of my tenure as governor, I’ve had the privilege to work with her and witness first-hand her commitment and dedication.

“Since October of 2014, Carcana has done an excellent job leading the military organization. I trust in her professionalism and continued work ethic to be beneficial for all Puerto Ricans,” said Gov. Garcia Padilla.

Carcana said, “It is a privilege and honor to serve the people of Puerto Rico and lead the Citizen-Soldiers and Airmen of the Puerto Rico National Guard as the adjutant general. I thank the governor for his faith and confidence in my abilities, the Puerto Rican Senate for their overwhelming support, and especially the women and men of the Puerto Rico National Guard for their service and sacrifice to our organization and nation.”

Before being selected as adjutant general, Carcana held several other leadership positions.
