Brigadier General Richard G. Maxon assumed the duties of Assistant Adjutant General, Arizona Army National Guard on June 1, 1999. This assignment follows three years as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel, Arizona Army National Guard. As the Assistant Adjutant General he provides guidance, sets policy and oversees the operation of the Arizona Army National Guard and its nearly 4000 soldiers on behalf of the Adjutant General.
General Maxon's military service began in 1972 when he enlisted in the Army for three years serving in Thailand and Ft. Hood, Texas with the Army Security Agency. Returning to military service, General Maxon was commissioned in the U.S. Naval Reserve as a Judge Advocate in 1979. He served on active duty with the U.S. Navy from 1980 through 1983. Entering the Arizona Army National Guard in 1984, General Maxon held various positions within the State Area Command principally in legal and personnel assignments.
