MAJOR GENERAL ROBERT B. NEWMAN, JR.

 

The Adjutant General, Virginia

Major General Robert B. Newman, Jr. assumed the duties of Adjutant General of Virginia on January 14, 2006. As the Adjutant General of Virginia, General Newman is responsible for the combat readiness of units, and the administration and training of more than 8,200 Virginia Army and Air National Guard personnel.

General Newman was commissioned a second lieutenant in June 1973 after graduating as a Distinguished Aerospace Graduate from the Virginia Military Institute where he served as regimental commander of the Corps of Cadets. He attended United States Air Force pilot training at Reese Air Force Base, Texas and was assigned to England Air Force Base, Louisiana as a standardization evaluation flight examiner flying the A-7D Corsair II. In 1978, he was selected as a member of an eight man gunnery team that won the British Royal Air Force Tactical Competition. After completing his tour on active duty, General Newman joined the Virginia Air National Guard as a pilot flying the A-7D Corsair II and the F-16C Fighting Falcon. He served as the Director of Plans and Programs at the Virginia Air National Guard Headquarters.

In July 2000, General Newman was selected to command the National Guard's first joint unit combining both Air and Army Guardsmen from Virginia and North Carolina at United States Joint Forces Command. After the attacks of September 11, he was called to active duty serving as the liaison officer for the National Guard to the United States Joint Forces Command as Chief of the Special Programs Branch, J3/Domestic Operations Division, National Guard Bureau. In July 2004, General Newman was selected to serve as Vice Director for Operations, Plans, Logistics and Engineering (J3/4V) at United States Joint Forces Command. Prior to his appointment as the Adjutant General, he served as the Deputy Assistant Homeland Security Advisor to Virginia Governor Mark Warner where he oversaw Virginia's critical infrastructure protection program and the Commonwealth Preparedness Working Group, a group composed of state agencies tasked with developing and implementing homeland security procedures throughout Virginia.
