BRIGADIER GENERAL CHARLES A. MORGAN III

 

Brigadier General Charles A. Morgan III is the assistant adjutant general for air, Maryland Air National Guard, Baltimore, Maryland. As assistant adjutant general for air, he represents the Governor and the Adjutant General of Maryland as the principal advisor on matters pertaining to the Maryland Air National Guard. He also serves as the commander of the Maryland Air National Guard and commands an authorized strength of 1,698 officers and airmen with 17 A-10's and 8 C-130J aircraft. He is responsible to the adjutant general for the overall management of the flying program and for ensuring that the units of the Maryland Air National Guard are organized, equipped and trained to support federal and state missions. Brigadier General Morgan is a dual-hatted officer also serving as the Air National Guard assistant to the deputy chief, Warfighting Integration.

The general graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1971 and entered pilot training at Moody Air Force Base, Ga. He continued training in the F-4E at Homestead Air Force Base, Fla., and upon completion transferred to Korat Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, where he flew combat missions during the Vietnam War. In 1979 he joined the Maryland Air National Guard as an A-37 pilot with the 104th Tactical Fighter Squadron and in February 1980 began flying the A-10. In his more than 19 years and 3,000 hours in the A-10, he won the 104th Fighter Squadron's Top Gun seven years, graduated from the Air Force's Fighter Weapons Instructors Course, and flew missions over both Bosnia and Iraq. In October of 1991, as captain of the 175th Fighter Group gunnery team, he led them to the world championship, by winning GUNSMOKE '91, the United States Air Force Worldwide Gunnery Competition, at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.
