Brigadier General Robert M. Cockey assumed command as the adjutant general
of Guam on May 24, 2003. He is the principal advisor to the Governor of Guam
on all military matters and is directly responsible for the readiness, management
and combat effectiveness of more than 1,100 members of the Guam Air and Army
National Guard. He also serves as the director, Department of Military Affairs,
which oversees operations and functions of the Department of Civil Defense
and the Veteran's Affairs Office.
The general graduated from the Citadel Military College, South Carolina, and entered Air Force undergraduate pilot training in March 1966. He is a command pilot with over 5,500 hours of military flying time of which 700 were combat hours as an O-2 forward air controller and an F-100 mission ready pilot in South Vietnam. He then served as a flight commander and instructor pilot at Air Training Command. After service in the active Air Force, he joined the Air National Guard and later the Air Force Reserve. He has 1,000 hours in the A-10, flew 2,000 hours in the A-37 and served as an instructor pilot for the El Salvadorian Air Force fighting communist insurgents. During Desert Storm, the general served as mission analyst at U.S. Special Operations Command.
