MAJOR GENERAL DRENNAN CLARK

dac.JPG (39615 bytes) Major General Drennan Anthony (Tony) Clark is the adjutant general for the state of Nevada. General Clark is the military chief of staff to the governor and commands more than 3,000 members of the Nevada Air and Army National Guard, including armor, aviation, signal and chemical battalions, a medical detachment, the 72d Military Police Company and the Nevada Air National Guard's 152d Reconnaissance Group. He is responsible for both the federal and state missions of the Nevada National Guard, and is the director of the Nevada Military Department.

He grew up in Reno, Nev., and graduated from Bishop Manogue High School in 1955. He attended the University of San Francisco and received a bachelor of science degree in political science in 1959. He attended law school at the University of San Francisco, receiving his juris doctor degree in 1964. General Clark completed Squadron Officer School in 1972; Air Command and Staff College in 1974; the Industrial College of the Armed Forces National Security Management Course in 1978, and Air War College in 1985, all by correspondence.

In July 1960, General Clark joined the Nevada Air National Guard, as a photo lab technician with the 152nd Reconnaissance Group. He was commissioned a second lieutenant on Nov. 9, 1964, and was assigned as a supply officer in the 152nd Supply Squadron. He was called to active duty with the Nevada ANG on Jan. 26, 1968 during the Pueblo Crisis, and served as the commander of the 6314th Supply Squadron's operating location, Suwon Air Base, Korea, from July to December 1968. From December 1968 through June 9, 1969, he was supplies management officer and later chief, Special Operations Branch, 6314th Supply Squadron, at Osan Air Base, Korea. General Clark returned to the Nevada ANG upon his release from active duty, in June 1969.

In May 1972, General Clark was assigned to Headquarters, Nevada ANG, as the staff judge advocate, and in January 1983, was appointed state judge advocate, a position he had functionally filled since 1975. He was the ANG nominee for Judge Advocate of the Year for 1983, served on the ANG Judge Advocate Policy Council from 1981 through 1984, and was the ANG judge advocate general liaison to the staff judge advocate, Tactical Air Command, from 1983 through 1984. He was appointed assistant adjutant general for Air on June 8, 1984, acting adjutant general on Nov. 20, 1986, and adjutant general on Jan. 1, 1987. He was re-appointed as adjutant general on Jan. 1, 1991. In June 1988, he was appointed by the secretary of the Air Force to a three-year term on the Air Reserve Forces Policy Committee. He concluded his term in June 1991, and was then appointed by the secretary of defense to the Reserve Forces Policy Board. He also served as the chairman of the Advisory Board to the ANG Professional Military Education Center in Knoxville, Tenn. from 1988 through 1991, and is currently chairman of the National Guard Bureau's Executive Environmental Quality Board.

His military awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with one bronze oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with four bronze oak leaf clusters, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award with two bronze oak leaf cluster, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal with one bronze star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Air Force Overseas Ribbon - Short, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with one silver and one bronze oak leaf cluster, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with two hourglass devices, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon with one bronze star, and the Air Force Training Ribbon with one bronze oak leaf cluster. He has also been awarded the Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon with bronze Arabic numeral 2, Nevada Distinguished Service Medal, Nevada Medal of Merit with two bronze oak leaf clusters, Nevada Commendation Medal with one bronze oak leaf cluster, Nevada Humanitarian Service Ribbon, Governor's Outstanding Unit Award with four oak leaf clusters, Nevada National Guard Meritorious Service Ribbon, and the Nevada National Guard Service Ribbon with one silver device.

In his civilian life, General Clark is admitted to the practice of law in Nevada. He became a partner in a law firm in Reno, Nev. in 1969 and later became a principal in the firm. General Clark is currently a member of the Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline, and has served a term on the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners and the Governing Board of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, a bi-state regulatory agency.

The general's civic affiliations include the Air Force Association, National Guard Association of the United States, past secretary of the Adjutants General Association of the United States, past president of the Nevada National Guard Association, Reno Elks Lodge, past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, past president of the Manogue High School Boosters, Manogue High School Advisory Board, University of Nevada, Reno, Wolf Pack Boosters, University of San Francisco Northern Nevada Alumni Association, past president of the Washoe County Bar Association, former member of the board of Governors, and chairman of Fee Dispute Committee, State Bar of Nevada, American Bar Association, and the Nevada Trial Lawyers Association.

He was promoted to and federally recognized as a major general on Sept. 29, 1987.
