Brigadier General Robley S. Rigdon is commander of the 48th Separate Infantry Brigade (Mechanized), headquartered in Macon, Georgia. He commands nearly 4,000 soldiers serving in more than 38 hometown units across Georgia. In February 2001, General Rigdon became Georgia's first General Officer to ever be deployed overseas when he led a 1,200-member National Guard Task Force to the Balkans. The force led by General Rigdon was the largest National Guard combat force deployed overseas since World War II. There they served as part of the SFOR-9 peacekeeping force in Bosnia-Herzegovina. As part of this mission, elements of the 48th Infantry Brigade were integrated with the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized). General Rigdon acted as the Assistant Division Commander for Multi-National Division, North.
The general began his military career in 1968 as a field artilleryman and was commissioned a second lieutenant from Georgia's OCS program in 1971. General Rigdon's military career spans more than thirty-three years. During that time he has served in a number of key command and staff positions. Four months after assuming command of 'Hickory's Howitzers,' 1st Battalion, 230th Field Artillery, General Rigdon and the battalion were mobilized for national service during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Prior to his current assignment, General Rigdon served as the Deputy Commander for Georgia's 78th Troop Command.
