BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN D. DORNAN

 

Brigadier General John D. (Dave) Dornan is the assistant adjutant general for air, Headquarters, Virginia Air National Guard, based at Richmond International Airport, in Sandston, Va.

He graduated from Penn State University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, and entered the United States Air Force immediately after graduation.

After completion of F-4 training in 1972, he was assigned to Bitburg Air Base, Germany. He remained on active duty for eight years before separating in 1979 when he joined Eastern Airlines. Also in 1979, General Dornan joined the Washington D.C. Air National Guard and flew the F-105. In 1984, he transferred to the Virginia Air National Guard as a traditional guard member. He resigned from Eastern Airlines in 1990 and began working with Northwest Airlines, where he is currently a Captain in the DC-9. His military positions included commander, operations officer, and "A" Flight commander within the 149th Fighter Squadron. In November of 1995, General Dornan took a two-year military leave of absence from Northwest Airlines and served as the Operations Group commander for the 192nd Fighter Wing, Virginia Air National Guard. After that assignment he resumed his commercial flying and was appointed vice-commander, 192nd Fighter Wing. During 1999, General Dornan moved to the Headquarters, Virginia Air National Guard, where he served as the State Headquarters director of operations, then the deputy chief of staff.
