BRIGADIER GENERAL JOHN C. INGLIS

 

Brigadier General John C. Inglis is the chief of staff, Maryland Air National Guard. As chief of staff, he represents the Governor, the Adjutant General of Maryland, and the assistant adjutant general for air as the principal advisor on matters pertaining to the Maryland Air National Guard possessing an authorized strength of 1,698 officers and airmen with 17 A-10's and 8 C-130J aircraft. He is responsible to the assistant adjutant general for air and the adjutant general for the overall management of the flying program and for ensuring that the units of the Maryland Air National Guard are organized, equipped and trained to support federal and state missions.

The general graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1976 as a Distinguished Graduate and earned a Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Fellowship to Columbia University where he received a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1977. General Inglis then attended USAF undergraduate pilot training at Williams Air Force Base, Arizona, where he was designated a distinguished graduate in 1978 and assigned as a primary jet instructor pilot in the T-37 aircraft. In 1979, General Inglis was assigned to the 30th Military Airlift Squadron, McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, to fly the C-141A and C-141B aircraft. While assigned to the 30th Military Airlift Squadron, General Inglis served as an aircraft commander, squadron training officer, flight scheduler and crew controller, overseeing the efforts of the training and flight scheduling sections. In 1982, General Inglis was assigned as an instructor of Mechanical Engineering to the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland. During his tenure at the Naval Academy, General Inglis earned the 1983-84 Clements Award, awarded annually to the Naval Academy's outstanding military faculty member. His selection for the Clements Award from amongst over 300 military officers marked the first time this award was won by an officer outside the Naval or Marine Corps service.

In 1985, General Inglis transferred from active duty to Air National Guard service as a C-130 pilot. Since joining the Maryland Air National Guard in 1985, General Inglis has served as an aircraft commander, instructor pilot, public affairs liaison officer, flight commander, airlift squadron commander, deputy group commander (for operations), director for operations, airlift group commander, Chief of Staff Maryland Air National Guard, and Director Joint Forces Headquarters MDNG. In his civilian career, General Inglis serves as a senior executive (SES-5) with the Department of Defense.
