MAJOR GENERAL EARL L. ADAMS

Major General Earl Adams assumed duties as Adjutant General/ Commissioner, on February 20, 1995. As Adjutant General/Commissioner he is directly in charge the Department of Defense Veterans and Emergency Management, which encompasses the Maine National Guard, Maine Emergency Management Agency and the Bureau of Veterans' Services. He is responsible to the Governor of Maine/Commander in Chief for the proper performance of duties. The Department of Defense, Veterans' and Emergency Management coordinates and administers the discharge of the Maine state Government's responsibility relating to military matters, veterans, and civil emergency preparedness. It is responsible for the initial recognition and continuation of the Federal forces structure, manpower, maintenance, fiscal operation and overall readiness of the Maine National Guard which is composed of over 3800 troops.

The General's military service began in 1957. He was commissioned an infantry officer in active service following graduation from the University of Maine ROTC program. Major General Adams joined the Maine Army National Guard in 1962 as a First Lieutenant and became branch qualified as an artillery officer. He completed a number of assignments that led to his becoming the Battalion Commander of the 1st Battalion, 152nd Field Artillery. Major General Adams served as the first Chief of Staff for the Maine Army National Guard from 1976 to 1989.
