General Officer Biography

BRIGADIER GENERAL JAMES D. JOHNSON

Brigadier General James D. Johnson is currently serving as the Vice Director of Plans, Operations, Logistics and Engineering (J3/4V), U.S. Joint Forces Command.' General Johnson, prior to assuming these duties served as the Commander, Joint Task Force Olympics, Salt Lake City, Utah.' As the Commander he was the senior military leader for the planning, coordination and execution of routine military support to the 2002 Winter Olympics and Paralympics games.

Brigadier General Johnson was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry through the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps at Utah State University on 6 June 1969.' Following Officer Basic Course at Ft. Benning, Georgia, he was assigned as a basic training officer at Ft. Lewis, Washington.' He was ordered to Vietnam as an advisor and served with Advisory Team 88, Mobile Advisory Team 135 in Kein Hoa province South Vietnam until his release from active duty in July of 1971.

Brigadier General Johnson joined the Utah National Guard on 1 December 1979.' He has served in command and staff assignments in I (U.S.) Corps Artillery and its subordinate battalions including Corps Artillery G1 and AFSCOORD, Battalion S3, Battalion Command, Deputy Corps Artillery Commander, Forward at Fort Lewis, Washington, Deputy Corps Artillery Commander in Salt Lake City, and culminating as the Corps Artillery Commander, prior to becoming Commander of the Joint Task Force Olympics.

Retired - Director of Development Services, Salt Lake County Salt Lake City, Utah. He supervises, directs, guides, coaches, mentors, and provides overall direction to a professional, semi-professional, and support and administrative staff of over sixty people providing land use, planning, building, building inspections, engineering, and business development services to the unincorporated County (population 450,000). Advises the Board of County Commission on all land use, building and development issues. Coordinates and provides administrative support to seven Planning Commissions.
