30th Heavy Separate Brigade (Mechanized),

Major General John C. Atkinson assumed command of the 30th Heavy Separate Brigade (Mechanized) on November 18, 1997. He commands a Brigade comprised of six battalions and Four separate companies, totaling over 4900 soldiers.
The General's active military service began in September 1968. He was commissioned an Infantry Officer with graduation from The Citadel. Brigadier General Atkinson served in combat as a Platoon Leader and Executive Officer in the Republic of Vietnam. Brigadier General Atkinson also commanded an Armor Battalion assigned to the 2d Armored Division under the round-out program.
