Major General George T. Garrett assumed duties as Commander, 42d Infantry Division, New Jersey Army National Guard, Fort Dix, New Jersey on October 1, 1999. As Commander, he is responsible for pertinent operational, training, administration and functional areas of subordinate units to assure their ability to accomplish their peacetime and mobilization missions. 

The General's military service began in 1966 as a Distinguished Military Graduate of West Virginia University's ROTC program. He completed the Field Artillery Officer Course and Ranger School, and graduated from the Field Artillery Surveying and Reconnaissance School. He was assigned to the 2d Infantry Division in the Republic of Korea shortly after the USS Pueblo was captured by the North Koreans in 1968. He assumed command of a Field Artillery firing battery located just below the Korean DMZ and provided artillery support to US-South Korean security forces. General Garrett has also been privileged to command an Armor company, two Mechanized Infantry battalions, and two Armor brigades in New Jersey's 50th Armor Division. He has also held numerous staff assignments in both operations and logistics in Field Artillery, Armor, and Infantry. He was assigned as Assistant Division Commander for Maneuver of the 42d Infantry (Rainbow) Division in 1996.
