Major General Alexander Burgin assumed command of the Oregon National Guard on March 8, 1999. As Commander, he serves as the senior uniformed National Guard officer for both the Army and Air National Guard in the state of Oregon. As such he is responsible for formulating, developing and coordinating all policies, programs and plans affecting more than eight thousand Army and Air National Guard personnel. Appointed by Governor Kitzhaber, the general serves as the principal adviser to the governor and his state agencies for all National Guard issues. As commander, he serves as the official channel of communication between the governor and the National Guard Bureau.
The General was commissioned a Second Lieutenant from the State of Oregon Officer Candidate School in June of 1974. He began service in 1969 and prior to his commissioning he served more than five years enlisted service in the Field Artillery. Prior to this assignment, Major General Burgin served as the Brigade Commander for the 41 Separate Infantry Brigade, Post Commander for Camp Rilea, OR, Assistant Adjutant General for the State of Oregon.
