Major General John (Jack) F. Kane assumed duties as the Adjutant General, Idaho and Commanding General of the Idaho National Guard February 26, 1995. As Commanding General, he guides the training, readiness, management and combat effectiveness of all units assigned to the Idaho National Guard. He also serves as director of the state's Bureau of Disaster Services and Bureau of Hazardous Materials.

The General's active military career began in 1962 when he enlisted in the Idaho National Guard. He completed Infantry OCS and Armor Officer Basic Course in 1965. Prior to his current assignment, he served as the Idaho National Guard Director of Plans, Operations and Training; Chief of Staff; and Deputy Commander State Area Command. He later became commander of the 116th Cavalry Brigade, which was the roundout brigade to the Army's 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized). He served in that position until his appointment as the Adjutant General in 1995. As the Adjutant General, he serves as the Commanding General for the Idaho National Guard and is responsible for coordinating all military support to civilian authorities and disaster relief operations in the State of Idaho.
