Brigadier General Harvey Haakenson assumed the duties as Deputy Adjutant General, North Dakota Army National Guard 8 December 1994. In this capacity he commands the North Dakota Army National Guard, and assists the Adjutant General of the North Dakota National Guard and serves as his executive officer.
The General's National Guard service began in 14 October 1958. He was activated during the "Berlin Crisis." He served various assignments until 1968 when he entered the Individual Ready Reserve. Since he returned to active National Guard status in 1976 he has served in Combat Engineer Detachment, Company, and Battalion Commander positions, and as the Commander of 68th Troop Command.

North Dakota Legion of Merit
He worked as a machinist, tool and die maker and taught his trade in a Vocational Technical Center. He later became Director of Vocational Education at Bismarck State College and served in that capacity for 10 years. New challenges brought him to become the Director of Buildings, Grounds and Transportation for the Bismarck Public School System for 14 years. He retired from the School system in November 1994.
