BRIGADIER GENERAL WILLIAM W. AUSTIN

 

Retired effective Jan 1, 2001

Brigadier General William W. Austin assumed duties as Deputy Commander, State Area Command, Illinois Army National Guard on September 1, 1997. As Deputy Commander, he assists The Adjutant General in planning for the mobilization and employment of Illinois Army National Guard troops, advises on their readiness status, assists in the organization, training and planning for post-mobilization missions, prepares mobilization plans, and assists in organizing, training, planning and providing military support to civil authorities.

General Austin was commissioned an infantry officer through the University of Illinois ROTC program on June 19, 1970. He joined the Illinois Army National Guard the following year after completing the Infantry Officer Basic Course. Prior to his current assignment, General Austin most recently commanded the 404th Chemical Brigade, until its inactivation, and has served in various other command and staff assignments throughout his career.
