BRIGADIER GENERAL LARRY E. GILMAN

Brigadier General Larry E. Gilman assumed the duties of Commander, State Area Command (STARC), Virginia Army National Guard on 16 January 1997. He is responsible for oversight of the state headquarters and subordinate elements, including the 91st Troop Command, Maneuver Training Center-Fort Pickett, and the 183d Regiment (Regional Training Institute). He chairs the State Readiness Committee, and serves as the principal advisor to The Adjutant General on matters affecting readiness.

Brigadier General Gilman was commissioned a second lieutenant, Corps of Engineers, on 12 August 1967 upon appointment from ROTC at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. His active Army service began with a tour of duty in Germany and culminated with command of an engineer company in the Republic of Vietnam. General Gilman served in the Army Reserve's 80th Military Training Command prior to joining the Virginia Army National Guard, where he has commanded the 276th Engineer Battalion and the 176th Engineer Group (CBT). Brigadier General Gilman led the 176th Engineer Group (CBT) through a very successful mobilization and deployment to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Desert Storm.
