Major General Tandy K.
Bozeman is the adjutant general of the California National Guard, headquartered in
Sacramento. He provides executive leadership of the military department and is
instrumental in setting the operational policies for the California Army and Air National
Guard and the state military Reserves.
He attended Lanier High School in Montgomery, from 1953 to 1957. In 1962, he graduated from the University of Alabama, with a bachelor's degree in anthropology. He received a master's degree from the University of California in 1978, and earned his doctorate in archaeology in 1982, at the same institution. His professional military education also includes the Air Command and Staff College, in residence, Maxwell AFB, Ala., 1976; National Security Management course, by correspondence, 1984; and program for senior executives for national and international security at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, 1990.
General Bozeman began his military career in the Reserve Officers Training Corp, where he was a distinguished graduate, receiving his commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. He completed undergraduate pilot training at Reese Air Force Base, Texas, in 1963, and was selected to remain in the Air Training Command as an instructor pilot, flying the T-37 primary jet trainer, Laredo AFB, Texas, and Craig AFB, Ala. In 1968, he left active duty to become a commercial airline pilot. In 1969, he joined the 146th Tactical Airlift Wing, California ANG, flying the C-130 Hercules out of Van Nuys ANG Base.
Since 1970, General Bozeman has served in various assignments of increasing responsibility, to include command pilot, standardization/evaluation pilot, squadron operations officer, wing air operations officer, and wing commander, and commander of the California ANG in August 1991. Their accident-free flying safety record included missions in Panama during Operation Just Cause, and major contributions to operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, in 1990-1991. General Bozeman was appointed as the adjutant general effective Jan. 1, 1993.
General Bozeman is an command pilot with over 7,500 hours of military flying time. His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with one bronze oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, Combat Readiness Medal with three bronze oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal with one bronze star, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with one silver and one bronze oak leaf clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with one hourglass device, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Training Ribbon, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm.
General Bozeman's civic affiliations include membership in the Society for American Archaeology, National Guard Association of the United States, and California, and the Air Force Association. In 1990, he was honored as "Man of the Year" by the Air Force Association in Southern California.
General Bozeman was promoted to and federally recognized as a major general on Oct. 6, 1992.
