The Adjutant General, Alabama National Guard
Major General C. Mark Bowen was appointed as the Adjutant General of Alabama effective January 20, 2003, by Governor Bob Riley. Bowen returned to the Alabama Guard after having retired in June 2000 with more than 44 years military service. As Adjutant General, he is responsible for providing support to all state units in training, administration, logistics, supply, maintenance and any other applicable functions and programs.
General Bowen spent six years as an enlisted man before being commissioned in April 1962. His early officer assignments included command of an Engineer Company, a Transportation Battalion, a Mechanized Infantry Battalion and an Ordnance Group. After being promoted to Brigadier General, he served as Deputy Commander of the 167th Support Command and four years as Commander of the 31st Separate Armored Brigade. After commanding the 62nd Troop Command, he returned to the 167th as Commander where he served until his initial retirement from the Guard in June 2000.
