D. Broman is commander of the 133rd Airlift Wing, Minnesota Air National Guard, St. Paul,
Minn.
He graduated from Duluth Central High School, Duluth, Minn. in 1956, and in 1963, attained his bachelor of science degree in industrial education from the University of Minnesota - Duluth Campus. His military education includes Air Command and Staff College, 1980; and National Security Management Course, 1982.
General Broman began his military career serving with the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1956 to 1963. He received a commission in the Minnesota ANG in June 1963. After completing Undergraduate Pilot Training at Webb AFB, Texas in 1965, he received his pilot wings and flew full time as an air defense alert pilot until 1969. In 1966, he attended an interceptor pilot course at Perrin AFB, Texas and the Air Defense Command Life Support Course at Tyndall AFB, Fla. in 1967. In 1968, he flew a tour in Okinawa with the ANG Palace Alert Project in support of United States forces in Korea during the Pueblo Crisis. He was one of the four pilots on the winning 1970 F-102 William Tell Team in Panama City, Fla. for the Duluth ANG. In 1974, he returned to full time ANG service as a maintenance officer. In 1979, he was a member of the National Reconnaissance Photo Finish competition, and was presented with the Best Overall Aircrew Award from among all other Air Force and ANG competitors. He became chief of maintenance in 1980. In December 1985, he was promoted to the position of commander of the 148th Fighter Group. In October 1989, he was reassigned as the commander of the 133rd Airlift Wing in St. Paul.
General Broman is a command pilot with over 4,000 flying hours. He has flown the F-89, F-101, F-102, RF-4C and C-130 aircraft in addition to several support and training aircraft. His military awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one device, Combat Readiness Medal with six devices, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with six devices, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with two hourglass devices, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, and Air Force Training Ribbon. His state of Minnesota awards and decorations include the Minnesota Medal of Merit, Minnesota Commendation Ribbon, and the Minnesota State Service Ribbon with twenty-five year clasp.
In his civilian capacity, he is the air technician commander of the 133rd Airlift Wing.
His civic affiliations include holding active membership in several organizations such as the Duluth Rotary Club, where he has served on many committees over the last nine years; the National Guard Association of the United States, where he has served on the National Resolution Committee for seven sessions; the Air Force Association and several others.
General Broman was promoted to and federally recognized as a brigadier general on May 15, 1991.
