BRIGADIER GENERAL CHARLES L. BLOUNT

clb.jpg (4558 bytes)Brigadier General Charles L. Blount is the assistant adjutant general for Air, Headquarters, South Carolina Air National Guard. He assists the adjutant general in organizing, commanding and controlling all Air National Guard units assigned to the state.

He attended high school in Conway, S.C., graduating in 1954. He also attended the University of South Carolina. He is a resident graduate of the National War College, 1981; Air Command and Staff College, 1974.

General Blount began his military career in June 1954 when he enlisted in the United States Air Force as a cryptograph operator. He was discharged in June 1958 and joined the South Carolina ANG, McEntire ANGS, Eastover, S.C. in October 1958 as a cryptograph operations supervisor. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in July 1961, and was assigned to the 240th Communications Flight, South Carolina ANG, as the communications officer. In January 1965, he transferred to the 169th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron as the avionics maintenance officer. He served as the squadron commander of the 169th CAM Squadron from September 1971 to May 1979, at which time he was selected as the unit commander until April 1980. After returning from the National War College in June 1981, he was reassigned as the deputy commander for resources until December 1985. He was then selected to be the executive support staff officer for Headquarters, South Carolina ANG until November 1991, when he was appointed for his current position as assistant adjutant general for Air.

General Blount's military awards and decorations include Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with one silver and three bronze oak leaf clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with two hourglass devices, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Air Force Training Ribbon, and Active State Service Medal with silver stars (35 years).
In his civilian employment, he is the full-time assistant adjutant general for South Carolina. In that capacity, he assists the adjutant general in the daily management of the South Carolina Army and Air National Guard as well as the State Emergency Preparedness Division.

His civic affiliations include a membership with the National Guard Association of South Carolina, National Guard Association of the United States, Air Force Association Chapter 383, National War College Alumni Association, and Post 6 of the American Legion.

The general was promoted to and federally recognized as a brigadier general on Oct. 6, 1992.
